Types of people at NIMUN
By Alizah Gul Memon
As the days of NIMUN draw near, it’s about time we give you some pointers on what to expect from one of the biggest MUNs of the country. (If you haven’t already read the previous blog posts, you’re doing NIMUN wrong. Go check them out as soon as you’re done with this little piece).
What makes NIMUN big isn’t the 707 acres of land NUST is spread across, but instead, the broad audience our brand caters to – welcoming diplomats and delegates from all over the world. With over six hundred individuals attending the conference, here are the various kinds of people you can expect to meet during your time here:
1. “I Signed Up Because My Friends Did”
No form of marketing is more effective than that done by friends, because if they go somewhere, so do we! There are going to be many people at NIMUN who’ll admit that this is going to be their first MUN, and that they’re here only because their friends made them sign up for it.
If you’re one such individual, and are here even when you have nothing to do with MUNs (or even debating in general), don’t worry; there’s always a first time for everything, and four days with delegates and diplomats from across the globe will leave you more enlightened and interested about current affairs than ever before!
2. Dressing to Impress!
Since being associated to NIMUN is huge in itself, there will be people who’ll want to make a statement, presenting themselves in the best manner over the course of the four days. You’ll find them showing up with their finest attires on, looking sharp, and definitely turning heads.
As delegates, even if such people do not dominate the committee sessions with their stances, they’ll for sure be dominating the photo albums on NIMUN’s social media accounts at the end of the day. As for the Organizing Committee (OC), our Executive Council is already leading by example, so we cannot wait to see how everyone else leaves us impressed!
3. The Ones Who Have Their Game On
In the case of the OC, such members will be found tirelessly working day and night to ensure that everything goes smoothly, with each and every element checked down to the tiniest of details.
On the other end of the spectrum, with position papers printed, notes neatly written and their placards always ready to be raised; these are delegates you should better watch out for – they mean business! Not only will they have their own stance backed up with references and details, they’ll even know everything about your country/personality’s stance as well.
It’s better to form an alliance with such delegates, because if you choose to go against them, you should either be just as well-prepared or the only thing you’ll be preparing for is a round of brutal bashing.
4. The Tourists
NIMUN is not only about coming together to discuss problems and finding their solutions; it also involves getting to visit Pakistan, and experiencing life at one of its most prestigious universities.
This brings us to the type of people who sign up for NIMUN to get first-hand experience as a NUSTian, and as a Pakistani, for the number of days they get to spend here. These individuals can be found snapping away, or getting someone to take a photo of them whenever they get the chance.
5. “I Only Came Here for the Socials”
Debating and MUNs aren’t everyone’s cup of tea, and you’ll find people who’ll be sitting at the back during committee sessions, while outshining everyone else during the social events. As delegates, these people will mostly just raise motions for entertainment sessions, and after the days die down, they will reign supreme at the evenings’ socials with their electrifying energy.
This year, NIMUN is all about “embracing differences”, so even if the individuals you meet here have completely contrasting personalities as opposed to yours, diversity can allow one to learn and grow immensely. So make the most of your experience here while it lasts
With that being said, we can’t wait to see you soon!
